Terms of Service
Last updated: September 28, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Distant Kitchens (the "Service"), operated by Distant Kitchens ("we," "us," "our"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
1. What Distant Kitchens is
Distant Kitchens is a private, invite-only cookbook for one extended family at a time. A family admin creates the family's account and invites members; members add recipes, photos, and the stories behind them, and everyone in that family can view and cook from them. Each family's content is private to that family — Distant Kitchens is not a public recipe site or social network.
2. Accounts and eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to create or administer a family account. A family admin is responsible for the members they invite and for what those members post to the family's cookbook. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity under your account.
3. Subscription and billing
- Distant Kitchens is a paid subscription: $6/month or $60/year, covering up to 6 people, with the first 14 days free. Additional seat blocks of up to 6 more people are available for +$6/month per block.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current price until canceled. You can cancel anytime from within the app; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing, you also agree to Stripe's terms for the payment methods you use.
- We may change subscription pricing going forward; we'll give existing customers reasonable advance notice before a price change applies to their renewal.
4. Your content
You and your family retain ownership of the recipes, photos, stories, and other content you upload ("Your Content"). By uploading it, you grant Distant Kitchens a license to host, store, back up, and display Your Content solely as needed to operate the Service for your family. We don't use Your Content for advertising, and we don't share it outside your family instance except as described in our Privacy Policy.
You're responsible for Your Content and for having the right to share it (for example, a recipe you're free to pass along within your own family). Don't upload content that's illegal, infringes someone else's rights, or that you don't have permission to share.
5. Acceptable use
Please don't use Distant Kitchens to:
- Attempt to access another family's data or account without authorization.
- Upload malware, or attempt to disrupt, overload, or probe the Service's security.
- Use the Service for anything unlawful or to violate anyone else's rights.
- Resell or provide the Service to others outside your own family without our agreement.
6. Termination
You can cancel your subscription and close your family's account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if an account violates these Terms, if payment fails and isn't resolved after reasonable notice, or if we discontinue the Service (in which case we'll give advance notice and a reasonable opportunity to export your content).
7. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is." We work to keep it reliable and your family's content safe, including regular backups, but we can't guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free. We're not responsible for the accuracy of recipes or cooking instructions your family members enter — that's your family's own content.
8. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, Distant Kitchens will not be liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
9. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page and notify family admins by email. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which Distant Kitchens is organized, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
